Pileated Woodpecker and Carbondale Fail

Early morning, Friday, August 13, a Pileated Woodpecker flew overhead while I was cycling out of Carbondale, Illinois. As I looked over to the left to watch it fly by, my bike bags collided with the guard rail and stopped me cold. I fell hard to the pavement and scraped my knee and elbow. I stopped into an elementary school (as the kids were arriving for their first day back) and the office staff patched me up. I later went through a drive-up pharmacy and got more first aid supplies.

Ouch! I’m glad you didn’t break any bones!

I’m glad too. A lot of cyclists break collar bones on such a fall. Counting my blessings regularly. Thanks!
